We had seven inches of snow at Sweetwater that was measurable. Some to the north also had seven inches and had one report of six inches. J.E. McGuire reported that they had nine inches of snow at their house.

Sent several photos of the snow to the local TV channels and one of the huge snowflakes to CNN. CNN showed the photo of the huge snowflakes repeatedly Saturday afternoon and evening. However, by the end of the day Rick Sanchez was doubting that the snowflakes were very large. You can judge for yourself how large the snowflakes were by looking at the photo at http://www.theburningbush.org/sweetwaterphotos.html

Toward the top of the photo against the background of the bricks of the house you will see very plainly two huge snowflakes. Other large flakes can be see above the house and to the right side of the house.

KOCO also showed the photo I took Friday of the Haliburton truck trapped on our church parking lot on the ice that still was there Friday morning. The truck had attempted to turn around and had become trapped. He was spinning his wheels again and again but was unable to escape until later in the day.

No church this morning and most likely not tonight although Don Roberts and Bennie Wayne are clearing off the parking lot.

If you have news that is Sweetwater related of any kind email me at wrather@dobsonteleco.com. There is apparently an immediate need for 700 or more workers in the industry at very good wages. When the reporter, Amy Lester, signed off she said "...reporting from Sweetwater, Oklahoma."

Much is happening in Sweetwater, Oklahoma. More and more traffic is headed toward Sweetwater and around Sweetwater everyday. If the state really wanted to do something to help the state they would support this industry by immediately improving the roadways. Don't wait ten years to complete the four laning of the highway between Woodward and Altus do it now. In addition, lay another two lane highway immediately from Elk City to the Texas state line on Hwy 6 to make it four lane. Ten, twenty, thirty years or if ever will be too late to help support this industry. Do something proactive that will really help the economy and do it now.

Why is there excess money at this point in the state coffers? It is not because of a lottery. It is because of the oil and gas industry. If we want that money to keep rolling in, if we want more money for education, if we want more industry of every kind, more jobs of every kind, see rural western Oklahoma reinvigorated? the only way to really do that is to support the oil and gas industry in this state and do so vigorously. He was buried at the Buffalo Cemetery. Pete was a long time resident of the Sweetwater area living northwest of the town of Sweetwater.

In about 1959, the Myers family experienced a devastating blow when a tornado destroyed there herd of cattle leaving only one cow alive. Their home was also destroyed by the tornado. All they had left was $40.00 found in Pete's bilfold which somehow was still laying in the area of the fireplace that was partly standing. The Mennonites from Corn, Oklahoma came and rebuilt their home.

Pete had lived in an Elk City nursing home since 1999. His wife, Mildred, passed away in 1991.

If you have news that is Sweetwater related of any kind email me at wrather@dobsonteleco.com. Revival services at the Sweetwater First Baptist Church ended Wednesday night.

Clint Sinclair was the evangelist and did a wonderful job of preaching the Gospel.

Ryan Baker is again the Youth Pastor at FBC Sweetwater. Welcome back Ryan!!

Film producer, Johnny Graham, has been in attendance for a couple of services at FBC Sweetwater. Cloud Nine Productions is producing a commercial for OERB and has filmed from several locations in the Sweetwater area. Don Roberts, J.E. McGuire, Hershal Anderson and others have had roles in the commercial. The purpose is to hopefully encourage Oklahoma oil companies to stay in Oklahoma. It is planned for the commercial will air during the OU/Texas football game. Cloud Nine Productions has landed a helicopter (Ranger 8 ABC News) on the FBC Sweetwater parking lot to be prepared for additional filming in the morning.

If you have news that is Sweetwater related of any kind email me at wrather@dobsonteleco.com. Last night the FFA had their annual back to school ice cream social. It seemed to be a big success with about 70 people in attendance. The FFA has several projects coming up including the Roger Mills County Fair, Blue and Gold sausage sales and the Labor Auction.

The elementary and junior high basketball schedule is already out. The Junior High begins play on November 1st in the Roger Mills Festival.

Carolyn West is the new head cook at the school. Tracy Reed is her assistant. According to the kids, the meals are very good and they are glad to have Carolyn and Tracy.

The cooler temperatures and plentiful rains continue to astonish us considering this is August. To date this month I have measured 7.6" plus the shower this morning. Tim Bryan and Scott Locke were the two who attended. They were joined by Tom Horton of Canute and Dustin Batterton of Berlin to make a four-man team. Other teams competing were: Cheyenne, Strong City and Crawford. Sweetwater won one of the four events and Strong City won three to claim the trophy. Afterwards, Cheyenne hosted all competitors to a cookout at their new fire station. It was the first one that I have seen in years. We do have all kinds of varmits out here. I've seen turkeys, bobcats, prairie chickens, emus, a fox and one mountain lion from a distance. Two people have described what could only be a bear or bigfoot. I think I will go with the bear.

In the Daily Oklahoman yesterday was an interesting story about a mountain lion being killed by a train in eastern Oklahoma. The lion had been tagged with a radio transmitter in South Dakota and had apparently made it all the way down here. The game ranger they interviewed said it was the first documented case of a mountain lion being in Oklahoma in his 23 years. I have read about other game rangers in the past also saying there are no mountain lions in Oklahoma. To help to enlighten out game rangers perhaps as a mandatory part of training they should visit the museum at Cheyenne to view the mountain lion that is stuffed and mounted there.

If you have news that is Sweetwater related of any kind email me at wrather@dobsonteleco.com. The Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department responded with three firemen reporting to the scene with the new rescue unit. Jeremy Henson, Safety Officer, was fire officer in charge of the scene. According to Jeremy, a woman from Pampa traveling through the area ran off the road, lost control and rolled over once. One of the new rescue tools, the spreader, was used to extracate the victim from the vehicle. She had a laceration to the forehead and complained of neck and back pain and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The firemen were pleased with the performance of the new unit and tools. Everything they needed was available and the rescue went very well. We are very fortunate to have the rescue unit, tools and dedicated firemen to respond whenever there is an accident in our area.

If you have news that is Sweetwater related of any kind email me at wrather@dobsonteleco.com. Counting them as I returned this afternoon I could see at least 10 rigs in the immediate area plus a workover rig. To the south extending to Mayfield are more rigs. To the west just over the state line in Texas are more rigs south and north of Hwy 152. West of Sayre there is another grouping of drilling rigs as well.

Lester Davis is still in the hospital and he is improving. They have taken the oxygen off and he is expected to go home tomorrow.

Definitely a little cooler today with the front coming through but no rain so far.

Looks like we have missed the rain again. We may want to consider doing what the Lubbock area did this year. They had been in a prolonged drought. In January the area sit aside a day for prayer and fasting for rain. Since then according to an article in their paper a month ago they had received 8.5 inches of rain. I've seen on radar that they have had more rain since then.

If you live in Sweetwater don't forget this is trash pickup day.

If you have news that is Sweetwater related of any kind email me at wrather@dobsonteleco.com. Ora Lee Roberts the wife of Sweetwater's Mayor was in the bank at the time of the robbery. Apparently a note was passed a teller by the robber. Our oldest living member, Esther Dickey, was back for the service along with many others visiting on this special day.

Tonight was the Sweetwater Baccalaureate held at the Sweetwater School Multi-Purpose building. Henry Fletcher, pastor at Buffalo Baptist Church, preached the message. Bro. Henry noted that if you don't believe in God the Bible says you are a fool. Bro. Henry also touched on the fallacy of evolution and that there really is a place called Hell. Greg Henson sang two songs in the service and as usual did wonderfully. Ruth Holland played the piano for the service.

Olivia Locke is the Eighth Grade Valedictorian and she delivered the Valedictorian address. Great job Olivia!

The Sweetwater Graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 14, 2004 at 8:00 P.M. Senior Graduates are: Heather Dolloff, Jennifer Gracey, Jenny McNeil, Daniel Luna, Tyler Locke, and Cade Sites.
Eighth Grade graduates are: Keisha Hall, Oliva Locke, and Hayden Snodgrass.

On a more serious note there will be a state parole board hearing on May 20 for Leroy Bryan who murdered Inabel Bryan. Leroy's execution is set for June 8. At one time I (Ed Wrather) was Leroy's parole officer and later I was Inabel Bryan's pastor.

Some of the people who attended the First Baptist Church of Sweetwater, Oklahoma this morning are: Ed, Jeanie, and Nick Wrather; Greg, Jan, and Kyland Henson; OK and Elma Henson. Darrell, Kathy, and Tyler Heinsohn; EL and Wilma Fowler; Ryan and Kasey Arrington; Rhonda and Chase Arrington; Esther Dickey and her daughters; Iris, Imo, and Sam LeGrand, Carolyn Davis; Vikki Fowler; Kenny and Pam Reed; Jessica, Rachel, Hanna, Abbie, and Bubba Millar; Jim and Linda Millar; Tracy and Michael Reed; Gerald and Judy Tipton and their daughters - Jan, Tammy, and Lisa; Jada and her husband; Roy and Ruth Holland; Wilber and Theresa Nabors and their son, Jerry; Janet, Terri, and Rose Goodpastor; JE and Clara Lou McGuire; Gail Sutton; Helen Smith; Elbert and Eva Atkinson; Roy, Hope, Taylor, and Emmie Varnel; Lester and Clara Davis; Butch, Joan, and Asleigh Hagerman; Rose and Janice Spencer; Norma Banks and her daughter Lisa; Tara Boswell; Ron Whipkey; and Don Roberts.
